Overgeared anime names: Grid, Shin Youngwoo and Takumi explained

Overgeared · Updated 2026-10-18

Opening-premise and publisher-information spoilers only. Japanese anime website and named English publishing editions, checked 18 October 2026; individual subtitle and dub tracks are not verified.

Grid is the protagonist's player name in the English Overgeared editions checked here. Shin Youngwoo is his real-world name in Tapas and Wuxiaworld's descriptions. The Japanese anime website instead names him 長嶺 巧, rendered Nagamine Takumi in the cited viewer question (Takumi Nagamine in given-name-first order), while retaining グリード for his game identity. Is Takumi a different character from Grid?

These names refer to the protagonist in different contexts and editions. The Japanese anime introduction names the man 長嶺 巧 and his Satisfy character グリード. English readers encounter the corresponding real-world name Shin Youngwoo and the player name Grid in the Tapas comic and Wuxiaworld novel descriptions.

The useful distinction is real-world identity versus game identity. A reference to Takumi does not mean that the protagonist has stopped playing as Grid. If an anime discussion uses Takumi while a comic guide uses Youngwoo, first check which edition the writer is describing.

Which edition uses which name?

Japanese anime website: 長嶺 巧 for the real-world protagonist, with グリード as his game name. The cited viewer question renders the name Nagamine Takumi; Takumi Nagamine reverses that order. The Japanese pages checked here do not supply an official romanization. The official character page is headed グリード.

Tapas English comic: Shin Youngwoo, also identified as Grid. Wuxiaworld English novel: Shin Youngwoo, whose game character is Grid. Ize Press's English comic volume-one description: Youngwoo Shin, becoming Grid when he logs into Satisfy. The reversed order in the Ize Press description is another naming presentation to recognize when searching the books.

Why was Shin Youngwoo changed to Takumi?

The checked official pages establish that the Japanese anime presentation uses a different real-world name. They do not provide a production explanation for the decision. Claims about a political motive, a required nationality change or how future story events will be rewritten go beyond these sources.

There is a further complication: Crunchyroll's own promotional article introduces the anime protagonist as Youngwoo Shin, also known as Grid. Promotional copy and the Japanese anime introduction therefore do not use one uniform real-world name. That is a reason to identify the precise source, rather than assume every international version has identical naming.

What should I search for when switching editions?

For the English comic or novel, start with Overgeared and Grid, then use Shin Youngwoo or Youngwoo Shin when needed. For the Japanese anime's materials, use テムパル~アイテムの力~ and グリード. The anime credits connect this production to Saenal's novel and the comic by Monohumbug and Team Argo.

This comparison covers the named websites and publishing descriptions. It is not a transcript of a particular streaming service's subtitles or dub. To resolve a specific line, keep the service, episode, audio language and subtitle language together; those details matter more than a general label such as the English version.
