Who is Neema Kraa, and what starts the story?
Neema Kraa is the High Scholar serving Bersun the Brusque, emperor of Orrun. As Bersun's twenty-four-year reign ends, a contest is due to select his successor. The publisher introduces the candidates as accomplished fighters, intellectuals and strategists: the competition concerns who will rule the empire.
The advertised mystery begins when a contender is murdered. Neema must investigate, while becoming involved in the struggle for the throne herself. That is the starting situation disclosed by the publisher; it does not identify the victim or killer here. Bersun is the ruler being replaced, while Neema is the scholar at the centre of the investigation.

Why seven contenders if there are Eight Guardians?
The publisher names seven animal affiliations for the initially described competitors: Fox, Raven, Tiger, Ox, Bear, Monkey and Hound. Their training takes place at rival monasteries. Dragon is the eighth: its representative is described as a proxy whose identity emerges after the trials begin. Seven and eight therefore refer to different parts of the setup, rather than two incompatible totals.
These names are a useful starting reference, without attaching a later identity or result to each animal. In the opening excerpt, the Raven affiliation is associated with work such as law, scholarship, teaching and administration. That opening description is not a complete account of every Guardian's abilities.
Opening-chapter names: the Valit family
The opening chapters introduce Yana Valit and her twin brother Ruko alongside their mother, Yasila. Yana is also addressed as Yanara. These are opening-excerpt identities, useful if you are trying to place a name without looking through a full-book cast list.
The excerpt gives the Valits' approach to the imperial court and their encounter with Bersun, with Yana as the reader's immediate point of orientation. The publisher makes chapters 1–3 available together under Part One, An Invitation. Use that excerpt to check the opening names and setting; it also contains events beyond the short character identifications given here.
